Bugged: A Nightmare

Hello gentle Reader.

I’ve been plagued my bad dreams pretty much all week. Over the last couple of days, all I remember are broken images, fragments of horrors that my mind cannot make sense of. But there was one nightmare, which I woke from this morning, that is crystal clear in my mind’s eye.

As in many of my nightmares, I found myself lying on my bed, pinned there by Simon who was sitting astride me. But there was a subtle difference…. Instead of him placing a pillow over my head in an effort to smother, he placed his right hand across my mouth and then used his left hand to pinch my nostrils together.

I bucked and wriggled beneath him ineffectively, while feeling my head sting from lack of oxygen. He stared down at me, his face grim with intent, and his eyes large and dark, cold with his twisted fury. But I noticed that something was happening to the skin on his arms; goosebumps about the size of grapes formed on his arms, then rippled up to his neck and across his face, then back down again, like some bizarre Mexican Wave.

The lumps on his skin burst and as they ruptured, a multitude of bugs erupted and scampered across his skin, totally covering it in a seething, twitching, glistening mass of ants, cockroaches, spiders and centipedes… Only Simon’s eyes shone through his new living ’skin’.

I could feel the bugs on his hands pressed up against my nose and mouth; I could taste the rancid smell of ‘squashed bug’ (you know that smell? Like a stink beetle or some variety of ants?).

“No more Second Chances….” Simon hissed, and as he spoke a spider crawled out of his mouth and scuttled down his chin and neck.

I was gagging on bugs and twitching in terror… and then I woke up.

Can I just say? I had to throw back the doona etc and check for bugs, because it felt so bloody real! Could’ve sworn I had bugs and spiders and so forth all over me…
